Loneliness

Do you feel lonely in your life? Are you isolated? Or do you have lots of people around you and just don’t feel connected to any of them? Many people find their way to my Toronto counselling office because of loneliness. I can help you with this problem:

First, I would want to hear about your life. I would listen closely and without judgment. I would also want to know what your life was like growing up. More often than not, loneliness begins in childhood.

Next, we would look at your history of friendships and relationships to see if there are any patterns that are contributing to your lack of connection. Loneliness comes from not letting people close. You believe you want others to be closer to you. But you find ways to keep them at a distance. Usually this is not conscious. Together, we will explore how you keep people at arm’s length.

Why, you may ask, would you want to keep your distance if you’re lonely? Well, to let people close means being vulnerable. This can feel dangerous if you’ve been hurt by close relationships in the past. I will help you to uncover and heal those old injuries. And before long, you will be able to loosen that armour and let people in.
